If you are using some of the an Nvidia RTX 4000/5000 series graphics card then you have the option to take advantage of driver level frame generation.
While Train Sim World 7 does not support DLSS Frame Generation out of the box, you can use Nvidia Smooth Motion to achieve the same result.
How to add a game to the Nvidia App
To enable Nvidia Smooth Motion you need to ensure you have the latest Nvidia App installed first, along with latest Nvidia Graphics drivers, which the app will recommend to you as needed.
When in the Nvidia App, you currently need to add Train Sim World to the list of games manually, you can do this as follows:
- Select the “Graphics” option, then click the three dots and select “Add a program”
Now locate where you have installed the game.
Example:\\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\TrainSimWorld7\WindowsNoEditor\TS2Prototype\Binaries\Win64
If your game is installed elsewhere, it’ll be the first part of the path that changes up to TrainSimWorld7 – and everything after that will be as shown above.
- Within here, find the executable and double click it to select.
(this is showing a development version, yours should show up simply as TrainSimWorld7) - Once added you can configure your graphics driver settings for that specific game.
What settings should I use?
At this point, you need to step back and consider what you’re trying to achieve because there is plenty of opportunity here for settings to be set in a way that causes more problems than it solves.
First, what is your target frame rate. If you’re using a 60hz monitor, there’s very little point going above 60fps, so consider your monitors refresh rate the upper limit.
You should also consider if you have any goals to lower GPU usage, which can help extend the life of hardware, reduce operating costs and reduce heat emitted from your PC into the room.
Now, set in-game settings such as whether you want DLSS/DLAA, Epic settings or Enhanced Lighting to your preference and then play some of your normal content and observe what kind of frame rate you’re getting.
Are you consistently hitting your target frame rate? If so – you could choose to do nothing here and continue as you are.
How to enable Nvidia Smooth Motion
If you want to lower GPU usage, OR you’re not consistently hitting your frame rate then this is where Smooth Motion can help.
- Enable Nvidia Smooth Motion and V-Sync in the Nvidia app
- Disable V-Sync within the game itself.
It’s crucially important that you set up V-Sync in this way or you may experience considerable screen tearing.
Nvidia Smooth Motion will double your frame rate, so try to set the in-game FPS limiter to HALF your target frame rate and then let Nvidia Smooth Motion get to the target. That’s the most efficient way to configure it.
There is a temptation to set the in-game FPS as high as possible, and then assume Nvidia Smooth Motion can simply fill the gaps up to the target FPS however in practice this can lead to some uneven rendering and visual artifacts. If you’re going to use Nvidia Smooth Motion you should set up appropriately to use all the generated frames.
